“I don’t think we had enough to beat,” Christian Horner confesses Ferrari were the better team in qualifying

Red Bull Racing's Team Principal Christian Horner

Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, admits that the advantage Ferrari had over Red Bull in the Qualification of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc is on pole for the Spanish race after a brilliant one-lap qualifying managed to keep Max Verstappen on P2. Charles at the start of Q3 committed a mistake and spun going over the chicane of turns 14-15. After the spin directly got into the garage to get everything checked, on the other hand, Max Verstappen managed a quick 1:19.073 and got hold of the provisional pole.

The Ferrari driver only had one lap to get himself on the pole, which he did ace brilliantly and was the only one to get into the 1:18’s (1:18.750) and was a 0.3 tenth over Max.

However, Max struggled with some power supplies and didn’t get to challenge for the pole abandoning his second and final run.

Later Christian clarified the issue the Red Bull driver had was not with his engine but with his DRS not opening. Anway the boss also admitted the advantage the red team had over the blue one was nothing they could compare with.

‘It wasn’t power’ but the ‘DRS didn’t open.’ said Horner. “I don’t think we had enough to beat that lap of Charles.”

Horner later said both the rival team were more or less evenly matched and what could decide the race will be the tyre degradation. He also credited Charles for the unbeatable lap he managed to get on pole with.

The hot afternoon in Barcelona is making the tyre dissipate more than usual making teams decide what tyres to go with and when to get them changed.

I think we are evenly matched, will be a close race tomorrow,” Horner with Sky Sports. “With these temperatures, it’s going to be all about tyre degradation. It will be a long race.”

The race will be an interesting one to watch for as both the rival teams are struggling with their own problems, and also with Mercedes not much behind we could see a tight battle for the lead and below.
