Charles Leclerc got emotional while talking about Sebastian Vettel after the German driver announced his retirement earlier today.

Vettel surprised the entire F1 fan base and crew after announcing his retirement from the sport at the end of this season, which was his first and only post on any social media. Sebastian has been the favourite of many people which not only includes the fans but also many drivers. Vettel has said that it is a decision he has made in order to spend more time with his family.

He made his debut back in 2007 for BMW-Sauber and was sent into the Toro Rosso seat the next year, where he got his first victory, from pole position no less, at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. It would take AlphaTauri/Toro Rosso 12 years more to win another Grand Prix, which they once again achieved in Monza.

Four championships at Red Bull followed, and then a move to Ferrari, but it did not go amazingly. Vettel did not win a championship – despite coming (relatively) close twice, and after an incredibly disappointing season in 2020 was replaced by Carlos Sainz – who partners with Charles Leclerc now.

Sebastian Vettel’s move to Ferrari was met with great anticipation – it is, after all, acknowledged to be one of the most coveted seats in Motorsport. Unfortunately for him, it did not materialize as well as he had hoped. Vettel has also said that he had been considering retirement from 2018, which was the last season before Charles Leclerc joined Ferrari, replacing Kimi Raikkonen.

Leclerc and Vettel were teammates for 2 seasons at Ferrari; the famous farewell message, where Vettel described Leclerc as the most talented driver he had ever come across in F1 comes to mind.

In a Thursday interview with Sky Sports, Charles Leclerc said: “The thing that I will miss most about Seb is just the person he is, a simple, very, very nice guy.”

“And, yeah, I hope he will still come to see us in the races next year,” he added.

Charles Leclerc has earlier said that during their time as teammates, he saw Vettel like an older brother, even if there were incidents between the pair, and some rumours of tensions as well. As the Monegasque revealed, Sebastian had been one of the drivers who texted him to make him feel better after his crash from the lead in the French Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel will definitely be remembered as one of the greats of Formula 1 – and his four consecutive championships from 2010 to 2013 remain one of the greatest periods of dominance by a single driver that the sport has seen.
