“In football, every tackle is different, ” George Russell wants a Football style directory in F1 after the frustration caused by penalties
George Russell
George Russell came out to speak about his frustration regarding the time penalties awarded during the Austrian GP. Several drivers were awarded penalties during the race for their acts regarding track limits. But George got a penalty for his collision with Sergio Perez in turn 4 on the very first lap. But the driver seems to disagree with the punishment he received even though it was set to be done out of the book regulations. He openly spoke about a need for clear change in the rules and compliments the Footballing approach for referees to be the path F1 should also move on.
Sebastian Vettel was also one of those to receive a penalty but for an uneven act outside the track. Seb was charged for leaving the driver’s meeting earlier than expected without permission from the directors. This season has been a clear question mark on the directory done by the new race directors, Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas.
” My incident with Checo last week, to the letter of the law I was in the wrong and I deserved the penalty, but I knew that as soon as he turned in from the outside he was ahead of me, and I knew I was just going to understeer under into him, “ said George.
“In football, you can’t say if a player tackles in this manner he is going to get a yellow card because every tackle is different. They try to have a guideline, but not a black-and-white ‘You can tackle like this’ or ‘You can’t tackle like that.’” accounted the Mercedes Driver.

George Russell asks for an evolution in the rules book
Apart from the grounds to ask for a change in F1 in accounts to Football, George also asked for an evolution for the rules book and get it updated as per new requirements.
“The feeling is they [the stewards] are doing a good job of sticking to the letter of the law, but sometimes things need to evolve. I do think we need a bit more open-mindedness between all of us, “ said George Russell.
“Ultimately everything has to evolve and for me, you have to go to the root cause of the problems and the root cause is the circuits,” George concluded.
George Russell after a five-second penalty and a drop to P19 after the first lap managed a great recovery to P4. He would have been in podium contention if not for the penalty but he anyhow kept his promise to finish every race on the Top 5.
