“It is a head game” : Jost Capito Comments on Nicholas Latifi’s Poor Performance In The First Few Races of 2022
Even though we have only seen four of the twenty three races that are scheduled to take place in the F1 2022 Calendar, the audience has been witness to the rise of several drivers in the current season, and the fall of some as well. While teams like Ferrari, who performed quite poorly in the previous seasons in 2020 and 2021, have come up as early favorites for winning the Championship this year.
But teams like Aston Martin and Williams have made their fans upset with the performance they have put up this year. Williams was on a steady arc of improvement last year as George Russell brought them a podium finish for the first time after a long wait since the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. But in 2022, with Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi as the main drivers, Williams have not performed as well as they were expected to.
While Alex Albon, who returned to F1 this year after his exit from the sport in 2020, has performed well considering that it is his debut year in the British team, Latifi has not matched Albon’s level yet. Even though Nicholas Latifi had scored points for the team last year, he is still apparently struggling with the new 2022 machinery that the team has manufactured, adhering to the rule changes that the FIA have mentioned for this year.
Williams Racing Team Principal says Nicholas Latifi is yet to get to his full potential in 2022
Nicholas Latifi has shown a sudden plunge in his race pace this year, and fans speculate that it is most probably due to the fact that the Canadian driver has not yet become adept at handling the new machine for this year. While his newcomer teammate has done quite well with the Williams car, Latifi has fallen back and is often found lagging behind Albon at the back of the grid.
When Jost Capito was being interviewed, he talked about the possibility that Latifi is underperforming due to a lack of confidence. He said, “Of course. It is a head game, isn’t it? He is capable of driving very fast and doing the same lap times as Alex if he is in the right place.
“The cars are a bit more difficult and trickier to drive than last year’s cars and he has to get his head around it. He gets the full support from the team and, of course, if you have a couple of offs, you have to fight with the confidence.”
