“It will help me for sure,” Antonio Giovinazzi believes his knowledge of the Monaco circuit will give him the edge
Antonio Giovinazzi
Antonio Giovinazzi made his debut in Formula E in 2022 with Dragon Penske, after he lost his F1 seat at Alfa Romeo to the Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou. But the start to this new chapter of Antonio’s life hasn’t been pleasant as he is yet to score a point in the first five races of the season.
This weekend, Formula E races in Monaco, and the Italian driver appears to be confident as he believes that his previous knowledge of F1 will help him perform better. Antonio agrees that the challenge is different, and he’ll do good.
While speaking to Motorsport.com, he said, “It’s better that I know it, and for sure it’s good for the format that we have tomorrow everything to one day. The things that I know about the track will help me for sure. But of course, I drove in the track with a different car, so all the braking points, all the references that I go to will be completely different.”
“But at least I know the track and I’ve been in the car at least two weeks ago, so it will be better for sure,” he added, as he’s attempting to catch up with his teammate. Formula E has certainly not been very kind to Antonio, but he is not the one to give up easily.
Antonio Giovinazzi’s fight with the downforce
F1 cars are known to be notoriously fast not only on the straights but around the corners as well. The low design of these beasts allows them to go faster on the turns than any other in any other competition.
Having driven an F1 car for three entire seasons, Antonio must be accustomed to it. And this is also where the challenge of Formula E cars also arises, as they not only run on lower power but also less downforce. But according to Giovinazzi, that still makes Monaco a tricky race.
As quoted by the Motorsport, he said, “There’s no downforce here, so you cannot carry the same speed that I am used to carrying. I spoke with JEV [Jean-Eric Vergne, his teammate] before and he said that he looked more scary to drive this car on this track than in F1. So we’ll see what happens.”
