“It’s just that”: DHL answers to rumours of them funding South African Grand Prix’s return to F1

South African Grand Prix

In response to speculations that it will play a significant financial role in the sport’s proposed comeback to South Africa, Formula One’s global logistics partner DHL stated that the speculations were “just that.” A local GP may be allowed to take place in 2023 as a result of several events being in jeopardy of losing their spots on the schedule; the Kyalami Circuit is designated as the host location.

DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa vice-president of marketing, Megan Collinicos said: “DHL is the official logistics partner of Formula 1 globally. The 2023 calendar has not been published yet, and speculation around the race is just that.” In the span of a month, there have been two unconfirmed rumours claiming that the South African Grand Prix will in fact take place and that DHL will be a key sponsor.

However, it is to be noted that the organizations involved here are yet to make any official announcement regarding this matter. Nevertheless, there have been reports of the organizations to make an official announcement sometime this week.

DHL, a pioneer in logistics, has supported Formula One for more than 40 years, making it the motorsport’s longest-running international partner. The group’s engagement in motorsport expanded during the ensuing years to encompass the World Touring Car Cup, the World Endurance Championship, Formula E, and MotoGP. These series are all governed by the FIA.

DHL became F1 as the sport’s official logistics partner in 2004, working with the teams and FOM to provide seamless support throughout races and test days. DHL provides F1 with logistical support, including transporting all 20 cars, each weighing 795kg, to every event on the F1 schedule. This season, the sport features competitions in 20 nations on five continents. Additionally, DHL transports the TV gear, auto and team gear, hospitality gear, fuel, and tyres.

“We are proud to support F1 along this journey. From physically delivering the series to engaging with fans both virtually and in real life, we’re proud to make this hair-raising sport more accessible for all. Just like out on the track, the behind-the-scenes action at a Grand Prix is all about speed, precision, and state-of-the art technology,” said DHL on their official website.
