“It’s the second match I lost this year”: Timo Glock details losing a table tennis match against George Russell

Timo Glock drove in five seasons of Formula 1, making his debut for Jordan in 2004, and then returning to the sport in 2008. That year, during the Brazilian Grand Prix, he was involved in perhaps what is the most notable act of his career, something that people still associate with him, 14 years on.

Interlagos was the site of the title showdown between Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa. Felipe Massa was comfortably winning the race, and Lewis Hamilton needed to finish fifth to take the title. Based on the racing positions when Massa crossed the line, he was champion, but there was more to come. On the last lap, Lewis Hamilton was battling Sebastian Vettel trying to get that all-important fifth place.

In the final corners, Glock was struggling for grip with his dry tyres (while the others were on intermediates), and Vettel and Hamilton both passed him, which was enough for the Briton to take the championship crown. Glock left F1 in 2012. He has worked as an expert for Sky Germany for some time, and appearing on the Beyond the Grid podcast, he detailed an anecdote involving table tennis.

As mentioned, Timo Glock works as a pundit/expert for Sky Germany. Prior to coming into the studio to sit for the ‘Beyond the Grid’ podcast, he had been playing table tennis with George Russell, part of his work to interview drivers in more relaxed or familiar situations. When asked if he was victorious, he said:

“Unfortunately not. It’s the second match I lost this year.” and detailed his match with Russell: “We call it ‘Stop the Glock’ Actually, against George, it was a really fun game because it went to three sets. I won the first, he won the second and then we played the decider.”

George Russell even put off a meeting to complete the game: “And the funny thing was that he had to go into a meeting. The engineers were already up, they said ‘We have a meeting’ but he said: ‘No, no, no! We need to play this, we need to finish this game!’ So he really had fun.”

Glock explained that this is part of their ‘Stop the Glock’ thing, as they want to conduct interviews in a different way, to get them out of the more ‘normal’ day-to-day interviews, and talk to them in a different environment, and he thinks that the drivers really enjoy this.
