James Hunt was and still is one of the most popular figures in the F1 paddock. The British driver earned himself a bold reputation as the playboy on the grid. The Hollywood film ‘Rush’ portrayed the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda, delving into the lives of the two F1 greats. Hunts’ son, Freddie, has come out criticizing Chris Hemsworth, who played Hunt, and movie Director Ron Howard, for the poor portrayal of his father.
Freddie was upset as Hemsworth and Howard did not even contact the James Hunt family over the script. Moreover, James’s son was not pleased with how his father was shown on the big screen. He said, “Chris Hemsworth’s performance, now I don’t know if I should be upset with Chris or Ron Howard, because he basically played dad like a t**t.”
The 35-year-old compared Chris to Daniel Bruhl, who played the role of Niki Lauda. Bruhl spent time with the Austrian legend to learn his mannerisms to re-enact in the film. A furious Freddie Hunt stated, “What did Hemsworth do in contrast? F**k all”. The Briton even confronted Ron Howard over his father’s portrayal in the story.

“I nearly slapped him,” Freddie on Ron Howard’s reply to James Hunt’s portrayal
The Hunt family was not happy with the way things were changed in the film. Freddi claimed that Director Howard bent the truth. When the 35-year-old asked Ron why there were so many changes made to the story, the Director said, “The truth was too awesome man. No one would believe it”. The Briton was angry with this casual reply and almost slapped Howard. He said, “I nearly slapped him”.
Freddie agreed that the film needed to cater to young audiences. However, the 35-year-old was adamant that it would still have been loved in the theatres if the film stuck to the true story. However, Hunt acknowledged that the target viewers of the film would not have known the problem with the film’s storyline as the audience didn’t know what had happened on the Formula 1 grid a few decades ago.
Thus, Freddie Hunt has slammed the makers of the film ‘Rush’. The film was released in 2013 and became one of the best motorsport movies ever. Though as it turns out, not everyone was happy with the storyline. The Hunt family remains furious over the inaccurate portrayal of James, as the former was not even consulted during the production process.
