George Russell managed a P6 finish after the French Qualifying with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton on P4. The Mercedes duo expects a podium finish from tomorrow’s race after going through their pace today. Though Lando Norris managed to split the Mercedes, the silver arrows see themselves on the pace with Red Bull of Sergio Perez. But they are still far behind the top players like Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen with a pace difference of around half a second.
Mercedes were expected to be on the level of the top two teams in the French GP with a lot of rumours travelling for their come back. But it didn’t really feel the same way after the qualifying sessions. The Silver Arrows have definitely got a raise on pace since the Bahrain GP but not quite yet to challenge for the win. Though their expectations and hopes still stay the same after a poor Saturday but a better Sunday in the previous races. George still hopes to close the gap from the top as only Mercedes are able to get close to it.
“We are the only team who close the gap to the front on a Sunday compared to a Saturday. Hopefully, Lewis and I can take it to Checo because Charles and Max are a bit too quick for us at the moment,” said George Russell.
George Russell also referred to the disappointing pace today
Mercedes really hoped for a much better run this weekend, even though they close the gap on Sunday, qualifying still plays a good role in the main race. French GP qualifying was like any other one the team had witnessed already but they expect a better Sunday.
“As a team, we were probably a bit more away than we would have hoped and expected after yesterday. I had a good run but made a mistake on my last lap. The gap is more concerning than the finishing order,” said George Russell.
Norris is also an opponent to be crossed on the path of the podium but Russell takes him as a lighter threat for tomorrow.
“They [McLaren] have always shown great qualifying pace, but we should beat them comfortably,” said Russell.
Mercedes will hope for a podium tomorrow with a streak on the last three weekends. With chances of a DNF and Carlos Sainz starting at the back of the grid, things might get easier for the British teammates.
