Liam Lawson has been in the Red Bull pool of drivers for quite some time and is easily one of the best young talents outside of Formula 1. He is currently making his trade in Super Formula but feels it is a huge risk for drivers who have an objective of making it to the pinnacle of motor racing.
Liam Lawson was in contention to get the AlphaTauri seat made available after the sudden sacking of former Formula E Champion Nyck De Vries. However, at the end of the whole saga, the former eight-time Grand Prix winner, Daniel Ricciardo, was given the seat ahead of Lawson.
The New Zealand-born racer has come close to getting an F1 seat quite a few times but hasn’t gotten it. While talking about his current days in Super Formula and how it is a disadvantage for drivers looking to get into F1, he said as reported by Speedcafe, “It’s something that I encourage everybody to consider to do if they have the opportunity.”
“Unfortunately it’s difficult with Super Licence points, you’re sort of forced to do Formula 3 and Formula 2 and basically get your Super Licence through those championships because there’s not enough points on offer anywhere else. Going to Super Formula without a Super Licence is too much of a risk,” he added.
Liam Lawson feels Super Formula is preparing him well for F1
While Liam Lawson is currently rating in the Super Formula competition, he ardently believes that his current stint is helping him massively prepare for the pinnacle of motor racing. While talking about the same, he said, “I’ve been saying for probably since the last time we spoke that, eventually if I get the opportunity to go to F1, I’d like to be in the best possible position. And doing this year is definitely helping that.”
Lawson has been around for F1 for quite some time and has often been seen on the AlphaTauri pit wall, Ricciardo’s deal with the team is until the end of the 2023 season, and the Italian team could look to try out the New Zealander from next season onward. However, it is big if there are several factors in play.
Liam Lawson is only 21 years old, and considering this, it seems that he still has time to hone his skills before making it into F1. Because F1 is not a finishing school and drivers are expected to perform from the get-go; otherwise, they are shown the exit door just after a very short period.
