Liam Lawson “disappointed” after failing to finish in the points following his second ever F1 outing
AlphaTauri’s Liam Lawson is disappointed to not have finished in the points after a brilliant charge to 11th.
Liam Lawson and Formula 1 seemed like a distant partnership that wasn’t going to happen for a while. Suddenly, a chain of events triggered the Kiwi’s big break into the sport. Daniel Ricciardo had replaced Nyck De Vries after just 10 races in 2023 and was showcasing that he hasn’t lost his pace. However, tragedy struck at Zandvoort as the Aussie driver got into an accident that ruled him out of the next few races.
In came Liam Lawson and he has shown how good he is in the first two races. His P11 finish in Monza last weekend was greatly appreciated by the paddock. However, Liam was not at all pleased. He overtook Logan Sargeant in the last stages of the race and finished behind Oscar Piastri who had a time penalty. He was on the verge of a points finish but sadly it was not meant to be.
In an interview, here is what he had to say about his performance. “Finishing 11th is a bit like finishing second, it’s a bit disappointing,” he said afterwards. “We potentially had the speed to finish in the points. It’s something we have to look into. I had a bad start so that definitely didn’t help. I still feel like I’m playing catch up compared to the guys around me, but definitely feel like I’m getting more comfortable so yeah, it’s obviously a good feeling to have two full races under my belt,” he continued.
Daniel Ricciardo will be able to return to race by the Qatar GP
The Qatar GP takes place on 8th October. Daniel Ricciardo has already missed the Dutch and Italian Grand Prix. Now, he is projected to also miss Singapore and Japan races that will be taking place in the month of September. However, if he is able to recover fast, a return to racing at Singapore is also a possibility. However, with it being a demanding circuit, it will be interesting to see if Red Bull want to take the risk.
On the other hand, there had been rumours of Liam Lawson fighting for Daniel’s seat. However, it seems like Yuki Tsunoda’s seat is the one under threat as it’s likely that Daniel will stay with the team for 2024. Liam’s performances have proven that he is a great asset for the team. It will be interesting to see what decision Red Bull will make in the coming weeks. All is on the line for Yuki and his F1 dreams.
