Last year turned out to be quite troublesome for Red Bull‘s sister team AlphaTauri as they just could not settle with a steady driver pairing. They started off the year with Nyck deVries replacing Alpine-bound Pierre Gasly. Gasly had been a part of the Red Bull family for a long time, but he decided to step out from underneath the Austrian team’s umbrella and join the all-French squad of Alpine. In Gasly’s place, former Formula 2 and Formula E Champion deVries was recruited by Helmut Marko, but the Dutchman failed to live up to the expectations everyone had from him.

DeVries’ discouraging results made Marko remove him from a regular driver role and install Daniel Ricciardo in his place. Ricciardo succumbed to an injury and had to be replaced again. This is when Liam Lawson, the Red Bull reserve driver who was waiting for his big break in F1, finally got the chance to shine under the spotlight.

Liam Lawson delivered some fantastic performances during his short stint at AlphaTauri as a proxy for Daniel Ricciardo. The New Zealander was particularly stupendous at the Singapore GP where he scored 2 points by claiming the ninth spot on the grid. However, that was not enough to convince Red Bull to hire Lawson for their sister team. And during his episode in ‘Drive to Survive’, Liam Lawson did not hold back his feelings about it.

I've just beaten the guy [Tsunoda] who got the seat. It was meant to be me.
Liam Lawson said, as reported by Express Sports UK.

Liam Lawson gets a documentary made after him to depict F1 and Super Formula experience

After being successful as an FIA F2 driver, Liam Lawson was offered the role of a reserve driver in F1 for Red Bull. He has also served as a participant in the Japanese Super Formula series during this time. And to portray Lawson’s experience in the different motorsports formats, he has gotten a documentary made after him, and it is called ‘ Liam Lawson: In The Wings’.

Speaking of his experience at Super Formula, Liam Lawson has insisted that it has only hobed his skills for when he gets to join the Formula 1 grid.

Doing well in Super Formula is massively important if you want a chance at Formula 1 – it's the closest by far to Formula 1 and is the championship that Red Bull like to send their drivers to as that last little stage of evaluating.
Liam Lawson claimed, as reported by Outlook.

In other news, the news that Liam Lawson would not be getting Yuki Tsunoda’s seat at AlphaTauri despite beating the Japanese racer in Singapore was delivered to the 21-year-old by Christian Horner. ‘Drive to Survive’ has captured the moment Lawson got the heartbreaking news and also how he reacted to it.
