Daniel Ricciardo has replaced Nyck de Vries in Formula 1, causing a significant lineup change. As a result, Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson missed out on a Formula 1 spot for now. Lawson, however, understood AlphaTauri’s recognizing that the experienced Australian driver was chosen to replace the underperforming Dutchman.

During an interview with Motorsport.com, Lawson expressed his understanding of AlphaTauri’s decision. He emphasized the immense difficulty of joining mid-season and recognized the team’s inclination towards selecting an experienced driver with a notable Formula 1 background.

Liam Lawson prioritized Super Formula, aware that his Formula 1 chances hinged on his performance. Lawson revealed to Motorsport.com that he intended to complete the season in Super Formula. He expressed his desire to secure a seat for the following year as his primary objective.

“To jump in mid-season would have been extremely tough,” he said. “They [AlphaTauri] were wanting someone experienced. I always wanted to complete the season here [in Super Formula]. My goal was to get a seat for next year.”

Overlooked for F1 seat, Liam Lawson shifts focus to Super Formula success

Liam Lawson was regarded as one of the potential candidates to replace Nyck de Vries at AlpaTauri. The Kiwi, however, was ultimately overlooked in favor of a more seasoned driver. With Daniel Ricciardo now on board, he will represent the Italian racing stable for the remaining 12 races of the season under the AlphaTauri banner.

In the same interview, Lawson emphasized that his focus remained on Super Formula, as his chances of reaching Formula 1 depended on his performance there. He stressed the importance of completing the year strongly, aiming to win the championship for the opportunity it would bring. Lawson stated his commitment to doing everything possible, ensuring he had no regrets if Formula 1 didn’t materialize.

“But this [Super Formula] is what I am focused on. Any shot I have at Formula 1 rides on how I do here,” said the Red Bull reserve driver. “I have to complete the year in the best way possible, and try to win this championship.”

Liam Lawson is currently experiencing a highly promising phase. The driver from New Zealand has two wins and leading the Super Formula championship standings after four out of nine races. Lawson’s exceptional performances have positioned him as a compelling candidate for a potential transition to Formula 1 soon.
