Mattia Binotto refused to speak to the media after the Belgian GP
The Ferrari team principle, Mattia Binotto refused to appear for an interview on Sky Italia after the Belgian Grand Prix. The Italian claimed it was because of his disagreement with Carlo Vanzini after the race at Hungary. The Sky commentator had pointed out to Binotto, his mistake of fitting the Monegasque driver with the hard tyres despite its failure to work due to the low temperature conditions on track at the time.
Binotto was annoyed by Carlo Vanzini’s words and countered it saying that Ferrari would not have been competitive regardless of the tyre compound being used. This is not the first time the Sky commentator has called out the Ferrari team principle, especially during the 2020 season when Ferrari was very little competitive.
This is not the first time that Ferrari’s strategies have brought ridicule and unsavory comments towards the team. Their botched strategies have resulted in the team losing crucial points in the championship against Red Bull. This was no exception for the team at Hungarian Grand Prix where the team swapped the worn out medium tyres on Charles Leclerc‘s car for the hard ones. Switching to the hard tyres was an unusual call as the track temperatures were quite low making it unfavourable to the Monegasque driver and it ended up in him coming 6th in the race and costing him some much needed points for the championship.
Mattia Binotto feels that Ferrari’s strategies are not a ‘weakness’ for the team
Ferrari has had a very successful start to the 2022 F1 season with them winning the opening race and scoring some significant points in the championship. With Mercedes being unable to perform to the scope this season, Red-bull has been the team to beat. However, botched strategy calls and driver errors have ended up costing them the lead, with Red-Bull having a 118 point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors Championship and with their lead driver Charles Leclerc losing out to the defending champion by 98 points, the championship is looking bleak for Ferrari at the moment.
When asked about what Ferrari lacked, Mattia Binotto said, “I have no doubt we always need to take steps forward, we need to improve on aerodynamics, chassis, power unit, strategy and all the aspects that can be improved. Having said that, I think I have a great team that takes care of the strategy and I don’t think that’s a weakness of ours.”
After the recent dominant victory by Red-Bull at Spa, many believe that Ferrari will be unable to make a comeback this season. Currently Red-Bull has a 118 point lead in the constructors championship and their lead driver Max Verstappen is sitting comfortably at the top with 98 point lead from Charles Leclerc.
