In a recent statement, McLaren CEO Zak Brown voiced his concerns regarding the deepening collaboration between Red Bull and its sister team, AlphaTauri, in F1. Brown emphasized the importance of maintaining genuine independence for each team, citing potential advantages Red Bull may gain from its association with AlphaTauri.
The collaboration between Red Bull and AlphaTauri has become a focal point of recent discussions within the F1 community. With Red Bull owning both teams, AlphaTauri benefits from a closer tie with Red Bull, involving the sharing of components to enhance performance. Concerns have been raised about potential inequalities within the F1 ecosystem, particularly regarding team partnerships and autonomy, which could impact the competitive landscape.
AlphaTauri’s recent surge in performance, moving up from last to rival Williams for seventh place after implementing substantial upgrades at the Singapore GP, has brought the collaboration into sharper focus. Leveraging Red Bull’s pivotal components and design, AlphaTauri achieved a performance edge that has raised eyebrows across the paddock. The team’s plans to integrate Red Bull’s advanced suspension concept for the 2023 season and speculations about adopting the formidable RB19 or its modified version for 2024 have added further complexity to the situation.
In a personal letter released by McLaren about the 2023 season, Zak Brown articulated his concerns and proposed changes to strengthen the values of fairness and competition in F1. Brown highlighted the need for the sport to prioritize rules that currently impact the impartiality between competitors. He wrote;
Most other major sports prohibit the ownership of two teams within the same league because of the obvious potential damage that it does to competition.
Zak Brown deems the Red Bull and AlphaTauri situation “unhealthy”
Recognizing the potential challenges posed by deepening collaborations, the FIA plans to issue updated guidance on collaboration rules to prevent possible violations. The regulatory framework aims to ensure fair competition and prevent teams from gaining undue advantages through close affiliations.

The McLaren CEO emphasized the need to champion independence, competition, and fairness in F1. He called for regulatory changes to curb the spread of influence between teams through strategic alliances and shared ownership, asserting that having two teams under the same ownership is unjust for competition. He reviewed the situation as unhealthy and wrote;
It’s an unhealthy situation because it impacts decisions made both on and off the track.

Brown believes that F1 fans universally support fairness in competition and a level playing field. He state;
Part sharing of information, shared ownership models, and strategic alliances within the sporting fabric of F1 will only serve to undermine the fans’ belief in fair and fierce competition.
The ongoing discussions surrounding the collaboration between Red Bull and AlphaTauri highlight the delicate balance between team partnerships and the need for fair competition in F1. As the sport evolves, it will be crucial for regulatory bodies to address concerns raised by team leaders like Zak Brown and ensure that F1 remains a true showcase of genuine competition.
