McLaren to enter Formula E, completes Mercedes EQ team acquisition

McLaren Racing has announced its entry into the Formula E from the coming season as it’ll acquire the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team along with its drivers, Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries, from the start of the Gen 3 era of the all-electric racing competition. The Mercedes team entered from the 19/20 season and will exit after the completion of the 21/22, i.e., its third season.

Mercedes Formula E team, just like the F1 tea,m has had successful years in running. In the first year itself, they finished third in the constructors’ championship and in 20/21 went on to win the constructors’ as well as the drivers’ championship with the Dutch driver Nyck de Vries.

The acquisition was announced by the team on its website as well as on social media platforms. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown expressed his delight, saying, “It is also satisfying to provide a home for the class-leading Formula E team that Mercedes has built, which will become a fully-fledged part of the McLaren Racing family.”

The acquisition of McLaren and the departure of Mercedes, both come at a strategic time. With the beginning of Gen 3 in the competition, things will change drastically as the cars are expected to nearly reach the speeds of an F1 car, i.e., 320 kmph or 200 mph, so it will be a fresh start.

In its three years of Formula E racing, Mercedes managed to accomplish everything in the second year itself. And with the acquisition of its drivers as well, McLaren is bound for hitting success and avoiding a slump upon its entry.

With the rapid expansion of Formula E coming up ahead, McLaren might’ve gotten in at a good time and has certainly capitalized upon its relations with Mercedes in the world of racing.
