Mick Schumacher, the Mercedes reserve driver, has been on the sidelines since the end of the 2022 F1 season. While he is actively looking for any possibility of securing a racing seat for next year, it has come to light that Sauber could rope him in for next year’s campaign of the sport.

Mick Schumacher was fighting for his seat at Haas during the 2022 F1 season but was, unfortunately, not able to meet the expectations of Guenther Steiner. He had a campaign that comprised extreme lows, and because of a few other reasons, he was ultimately shown the exit door.

Sauber F1 employs former 10-time Grand Prix winner Valtteri Bottas and up-and-coming racer Zhou Guanyu. While the former has a contract with the team that covers next year, Guanyu, on the other hand, is still not guaranteed a drive on the team for the 2024 season of the pinnacle of motor racing.

The uncertainty regarding the second seat on the team has led to rumors of Mick Schumacher being seen as a potential target for Sauber for next year. The 24-year-old was recently asked to shed light on his next year’s prospects, and he said, “I’m still working on it… Time is running out a bit, but in the end, I have to take my time.”

While Mick Schumacher is desperate to get back to racing in F1 amidst Sauber rumors, renowned F1 journalist Joe Seward has indicated that the picture for the German is bleak for next year. Still, he could come into real contention when Audi fully takes over the Sauber outfit ahead of the 2026 campaign.

While talking about the same, he said, as reported by Motorsportsweek, “The only real option, as far as I can see, is for the team to try to get some money from Germany for Mick Schumacher, as it is clear that he has no future at Mercedes beyond being a smiling face with a famous name. Using Schumacher might appeal to the team’s future owner Audi.”

Mick Schumacher has always been a crucial case in F1, and has mixed opinions around him within the F1 paddock. While he is currently on the sidelines, he has got age on his side as he is still very young, and even if he is unable to secure a seat for next year, he could sit out at least one more campaign before exploring options outside of F1.
