“I took the reference off that,” Mick Schumacher dejected after being misled by a ‘bollard’ in the Mexican GP qualifying

“I took the reference off that,” Mick Schumacher dejected after being misled by a ‘bollard’ in the Mexican GP qualifying

Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher has been sailing on the same ship of oscillating between highs and lows. Schumacher’s future is very uncertain, but a decision is expected in the near future, which may go either way. Guenther Steiner has kept the contract extension on hold so that he can decide what will be best for the team in the future.

Schumacher has been involved in quite a few expensive crashes, with notable examples being Monaco and especially Saudi Arabia, where he could not start the race. This surely hasn’t helped his case. With the season’s end coming close race by race, the German needs points, desperately. It is not as if he has been wholly inferior to Kevin Magnussen, but incidents and other factors keep him from extending his points tally.

But with now two races left, Schumacher’s fortunes aren’t turning. He didn’t have a great qualifying session either, and was knocked out in Q1: “It was always going to be tough. But I think more than that, it was also the gentleman’s agreement that wasn’t kept, by like three or four cars. Which was silly, really. But it’s the way it is.” said Mick Schumacher as per Autosport. He finished 16th in the race.

Mick Schumacher is not happy with the ‘bollard’ positioning

Mick Schumacher had a lap time of 1m16.965s in Q1 which logged him a P6 position. But the lap time was later deleted for track limits, which meant that his Q2 hopes dashed away. Schumacher wasn’t happy with the positioning of the bollard which he took as a reference for the corner while driving.

The 2022 cars make it difficult for the drivers to get a proper view of the corner as the tyres are quite large. He thought that the lap would have been good enough, but alas: “But in my eyes, it was going to be enough. If the bollard is there, it’s there for a reason. I took the reference off that. Unfortunately, I think that’s a point that we’ll probably have to address, because with these cars obviously these days, it’s hard to see.” explained Schumacher.

He asked for the bollard to be positioned differently: “If we have a bollard, it would be great if the bollard was positioned in such a manner that you’re not able to go over [track limits]. That would definitely help a lot all of us.”

Mick Schumacher might lose his seat to Nico Hulkenberg for the next season. Haas seek experience, and Guenther Steiner has publicly stated that he is ‘done’ with rookies, which rules out someone like Pietro Fittipaldi taking the seat. Schumacher Jr. will have to fight an uphill battle to secure his future with the team. Unfortunately, Mexico turned out to be another fruitless race for the German, which hasn’t helped him.
