Mick Schumacher was ousted from the Haas F1 team after just two seasons. The German driver was forced to sit on the sidelines as a Mercedes reserve in 2023. However, the 24-year-old will return to racing this year with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship. Now, Schumacher has revealed the other alternatives he considered for his racing return.
The German driver mentioned that Mercedes wanted him to get back to racing in 2024. As Schumacher needed to continue racing to keep in touch with his racecraft. The 24-year-old mentioned that he looked over the pros and cons of various categories. Ultimately, Alpine’s Hypercar campaign was the best option for the former Haas driver.
For [Mercedes], it was very important for me to be back on a race grid and keep that race-craft up to date... personally, WEC was the one with the least contraries and the most pros, and in the end, it was pretty easy for me to decide that was the challenge I wanted to take.Mick Schumacher said as reported by Racingnews365
Mick Schumacher claimed that he considered the possibility of racing in the Japanese Super Formula series and the American IndyCar championship as well. However, the German understood that moving to the US or Japan would make it difficult for him to continue his F1 duties at the Silver Arrows for 2024.
I [considered going to Japan] and also considered going west [to IndyCar], but the thing is, if you do that, there's little chance of doing a dual program [with F1].
Mick Schumacher remains eager to prove his worth
The former F2 champion was considered a future world champion when he made his F1 debut in 2021. The 24-year-old outperformed teammate Nikita Mazepin during their time as teammates. Mick Schumacher failed to match Kevin Magnussen in 2022 and had multiple incidents. This led to Haas paying millions in repair bills for Schumacher’s car damage. Ultimately the American team decided to replace the 24-year-old with Nico Hulkenberg for 2023. As such, the Mercedes reserve has a lot to prove this year.
Mick Schumacher would be aiming to showcase his talent with Alpine in WEC. The 24-year-old has a great opportunity in the Hypercar class this year which could allow him to even fight for victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Although, it remains to be seen how Schumacher performs in his first season in the world of endurance racing.
