Oscar Piastri‘s shocking announcement about his move to McLaren instead of Alpine was hugely controversial during the F1’s ‘silly season’ in 2022. There were a lot of eyebrows raised about the Australian’s move as Alpine seemed to be following more of an upward trend that year.
But, after his successful rookie season, taking the sprint race win in Qatar, multiple podiums, and Mclaren’s resurgence, the Australian recently spoke to Speedcafe about how he thinks he’s in the right place.
The 2021 F2 winner is a proud member of McLaren.
How we developed in the second half of last year was pretty remarkable, not just saying that because I’m a McLaren driver. We saw really, last year, two teams take that kind of step; we saw Aston Martin, from 2022 to 2023 take a monumental step, and then us, pretty much mid-season. The fact that we were able to do that was very reassuring that I was in the right place and also, we’re one of the top teams now.

Oscar Piastri concluded by saying how due to McLaren’s massive step mid-way through the 2023 season, the team is now back to being one of the top outfits. Fans of the Australian will be happy with the news as he seems to have no regrets, about joining the papaya-colored team.
Oscar Piastri shares an insight into choosing Mclaren over Alpine
Oscar Piastri‘s progress through the junior ranks was backed by Alpine’s Drivers Academy. The 22-year-old was one of the most successful young drivers available after his F2 win in 2021, but his progress into F1 was halted due to Alpine’s seats being occupied.
The driver could have easily had a racing seat in other racing categories if not for his manager Mark Webber‘s decision to try to get him a seat at McLaren. Recently, the Australian has shared his thoughts on the same.
That’s just how it is. We all have our own big decisions but for me, definitely, it’s obviously been paid off and I’m able to do what I want to do in life. That’s definitely what gets me out of bed every morning and to continue to keep going.

Piastri is satisfied with his decision to move to McLaren, as the team has rapidly developed and become one of the top teams in F1. He is going from strength to strength with each passing race and considering this, several eyes will be on him during the Japanese GP.
