“Perez went faster than expected,” Inaki Rueda lists down the mistakes committed by Ferrari with Charles Leclerc

Inaki Rueda, Ferrari’s strategist, accepts the failure in Monaco with the loss of Charles Leclerc’s clear victory over the Red Bulls, the wrong calls took everything from them. He mentioned the mistakes the team committed that took a very much possible victory from the hand of the Home hero.

First Mistake changing the momentum of the race

The strategist mentioned two mistakes that took their chance away, first was to cover Perez up after the pit stop which would give them a clear way on the lead, and they significantly failed to do it. “With Charles we made two mistakes. First was to cover Perez.” he said. To their surprise, Perez went faster than expected and took away the lead, “We thought we could cover Perez, and the last timing reference showed us that Charles would come out ahead. Perez went faster than expected and we lost the race.” he continued.

Second Mistake taking away the victory

The second mistake was the double pit stop, the optimal time for a double pit stop was 6 seconds and they had a lead of 5.5 which was good enough for both of them to pit. But as they pitted for the double slicks the gap got reduced to 3.5 seconds, blowing away all the calculations they had. They further miscommunicated with Charles and told him to first get in but then changed it to stay out, but it was already too late for them to think twice over the call.

“Second was to double stop.”

“You need 6s gap to do a double stop, and we thought 5.5s would be fine. As they entered the pits, the gap was down to 3.5s. We told Charles to stay out, but he had already entered the pits. Charles had to wait for Carlos and lost time.” said Inaki.

Ferrari still has a lot to cover if they want to stick with the Red Bulls for the fight. With Sergio Perez now 6 points behind Charles Leclerc, it’s high time for the Italian Team to get their mistakes aside.
