Formula 1 has witnessed quite a few changes in the last few years, but despite this fact, several changes are in the pipeline, and one of them is the ongoing tussle regarding the ban of tire blankets in F1. Pirelli believes it has done everything to prove to F1 that its tires can operate without the tire blankets from 2024 onward.

However, while Pirelli is confident, the consensus in the F1 paddock is that the hierarchy of the sport would look to continue with tire blankets for the slick tires, at least for next year, with the possibility of running intermediate and wet tires without shrouds. The saga is still ongoing, and F1 is expected to decide soon.

While a lot has already been said about how things are going, Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra told Autosport, “In general we are happy, and we have defined a document for evaluation of the F1 Commission by the team principals. So we are where we wanted to be at this point of the season.”

Then obviously we have other tests, we have Spa, then we have Monza, then we have the in-competition tests. The development phase, it’s not yet finished. So we still have some something to test, some new compounds. Construction is almost finalised. We are really looking for the compounds,” he added.

While Pirelli has found itself in the limelight because of the ongoing tire blankets tussle, the tire manufacturer has been a trusted partner of the sport since the 2011 season. Since then, they have done a magnificent job, and F1 has not felt the need to replace them with any other tire supplier.

However, with time, competition is inevitable, and for the 2025 tender of supplying F1 tires, Pirelli has got competition from Bridgestone, who have also made their intentions known. F1 is dwelling on the same and could soon announce which brand will get the nod from 2025 onward.

Pirelli is slated to hold a blanket-free slicks test at Spa with McLaren and Aston Martin this week, and its results could impact the ongoing tire blankets and 2025 tender tussle. A lot would be taking place at the Spa-Francorchamps F1 Circuit this week, and the F1 hierarchy would keep close tabs on everything.
