Of all Red Bull’s junior drivers, F2 driver Ayumu Iwasa is perhaps the most promising. He is third in the F2 standings, well above his Red Bull teammates. As Red Bull is in a tussle with the Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo situation and Iwasa’s contract with Honda, he talked about how he is considering options aside from Red Bull to enter F1.

Iwasa said that he aims to be the world champion, irrespective of the team he achieves the feat with. He believes that his performance in F2 is the only thing that matters regarding his entry to F1. Iwasa’s closest rival for the Red Bull seat is Liam Lawson, who competes in Super Formula.

“My dream is not to ride F1 at Red Bull or F1 at Aston Martin, but to become the World Champion in F1 and stay in that position. That’s why I’m not conscious of that. In the end, my performance in F2 is important,” Iwasa was quoted by autosport

Iwasa is currently tied to both Red Bull and Honda. After Aston Martin’s announcement of switching their engine suppliers to Honda, Iwasa is subjected to a unique situation between Red Bull and Aston Martin. But the Japanese driver’s present sole focus is to improve his F2 performances.

Honda has made a comeback to F1 after just one season with Aston Martin. Their partnership was officially announced in May, according to which Aston Martin would make Honda as their primary power unit supplier over Mercedes from 2026. But it is now reported that Aston Martin was not Honda’s first choice for its re-entry to F1.

According to a report by BusinessF1, Honda was set to sign a deal with Michael Andretti’s Andretti Autosport. The two are already partners in IndyCar as well. As the two teams had almost agreed on the terms, Andretti suddenly announced their partnership with General Motors as their primary engine supplier. At the same time, Honda also made its move and finalized a deal with Aston Martin.

As things stand, while Honda has made it certain that they will come back to F1, the same cannot be said for Andretti. The final decision on whether an 11th team will be added to F1 is still to be taken. After numerous postponements, FIA has announced it will decide by September.
