‘Rules to be voted on August 16’: FIA preparing to take a major decision on technical regulations of the engines proposed to be used in 2026

The FIA

FIA has been proactive this year around after what transpired last year in Abu Dhabi. We saw a season with a lot of highs but eventually ending with controversy, tainting the image of the governing body. This meant that there were decisions that were needed to be taken and also keep an eye on the implementation of the new rules and regulations. Let’s dive into the changes already brought in and expected to be brought in the future.

At the start of the year, we saw a massive overhaul in regulations to make the sport more exciting and also help in building on the immensely successful season in 2021. FIA decided to bring in new cars for this hybrid era of F1. This was done to allow the drivers to follow each other for longer durations and also helping them to have more overtaking opportunities over the course of the season.

There is another initiative that the FIA has taken and that is making F1 sustainable. The organization has pledged to make the sport carbon free by 2030 and continuous efforts are made to move in that direction. A vote is set to taken on the 16th of August to decide on the new cycle of engines to be introduced for the 2026 season. These engines will be without MGU-H and will be replaced by the electric element of MGU-K to generate more power.

This could be make or break for companies like Porsche and Audi, who are planning to enter F1. Earlier Volkswagen CEO had said, “Formula 1 is developing extremely positively worldwide. But, you can’t get into Formula 1 unless a technology window opens. You need a rule change to get in there.”

“You need a new engine development and to make the new engine development, you need three or four years. The current engine regulations are now in their ninth season.”

“We assume that in ’26, ’28 it will still be the biggest motorsport spectacle in the world, even more so than today. More in China, more in the USA than today and thus also the largest marketing platform for premium vehicles.”

It’s pretty clear that Volkswagen is itching its hands to enter F1 and this could be the perfect opening for them. It’s been also reported that this vote is a mere formality as everything has already been decided. Therefore, exciting days lie ahead for F1 fans.
