Sebastian Vettel states F1 must “not get lapped” in its push for sustainability

Sebastian Vettel has recently weighed in on the topic of sustainability and suggested that F1 should invest some of its profits towards helping the race promoters organize events that help in combating environment-related issues within the sport.

Sebastian Vettel has been the protagonist in F1 when it comes to sustainability and has now and then brought attention to the issue by wearing t-shirts with slogans and warnings throughout the season.

Formula One has also upped its actions in order to become environment friendly as they have also come up with the target of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030. As a step in this direction, F1 is all set to switch to 100 percent synthetic and sustainable fuel in 2026.

While sharing his thoughts at a World eX summit that supports zero emissions through racing, Vettel said, “Any type of event that attracts a big crowd has to live up to the responsibilities that come with our times.”

Obviously we attract big crowds in Formula 1. I think that the sport got more popular in recent years with new fan bases, especially in North America, making the sport bigger and growing.”

“But with that, there are more people that need to get to the track, that need to be managed when they are at the track. So yes, there’s a lot that can be done, similar to other big events.”

Obviously, how people get to the event, public transport is not just a big topic in general but also coming and going from events, so there are lots of things I think we can do.”

In the end, we need to take some of the sort of turnover or money that Formula 1, in particular, makes and try and reinvest to the promoters and give them the chance to decide for a better, greener, cleaner solution when it comes to handling crowds and dealing with the event.”

Formula One has been criticized for the impact that it has on the environment despite the steps that they are taking to move technology forward in a responsible manner.

The V6 turbo hybrid power units are the most efficient in the field of motor racing but certain sections of people still target people like Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel who is saying goodbye to F1 at the end of the current campaign has asked the F1 hierarchy to stay vigilant and keep looking for bigger and better solutions.

Vettel has further added, “Ultimately it doesn’t make a big difference whether we are driving cars, or having a music concert or doing other things, looking at the big crowd and the footprint of the crowd itself.”

But it comes back to the question of relevance. And if we don’t find a way to really help shift change, and contribute to the fact that everybody benefits from what we’re doing for fun, and the innovation in engineering that comes with it, then I think very soon the question will come up: ‘Okay, what is the point.”

We get the point because we love it, we are motorsport enthusiasts, and you don’t need to explain it to us. But if you zoom out and speak to a crowd that has nothing to do with motorsports, very rightly, I think these questions will come up in the future.”

So it is up to us to be ahead to be a lap ahead and not get lapped, so to say, with the enormous power that we have.

We’re spending a lot of money in motorsport but with that comes a lot of innovation and engineering and power that can be channeled in a better direction, so that everybody even outside of motorsport, one day, benefits, whether then the answer is electric, or hydrogen or something else.

Sebastian Vettel has given a deep view into what he thinks about sustainability in F1 and after looking at what the former four-time World Champion has said, it can be assumed that F1 has got a lot of potential to make it environment friendly and with the right application of resources and all the innovation that is taking place, F1’s target of reaching net zero can be achieved at sooner than expected.

F1 is the pinnacle of motor racing and for it to show that the racing world can become environment friendly is going to send the right message across the world which will help in motivating the other classes of racing to do what F1 is doing.

It is a long process, however, with the right attitude and implementation of the resources available at the disposal of F1, everything is possible and things can get better for the whole world. As all the efforts are being made keeping in view the health of our beloved planet.
