Sustainability has always been a major objective for F1. The FIA has introduced several initiatives to foster sustainability and environmental responsibility in motorsport. These include the Thee Star Accreditation program, FIA Environmental Accreditation for Championships, and the FIA Smart Cities initiative. These endeavors highlight the FIA’s dedication to sustainability and environmental causes, positioning it as a leading advocate for sustainable development within the motorsport industry.
The next step for F1 is moving toward sustainable fuel, with care for the environment parallel to ensuring maximum performance. P1 Fuels technology garnered significant attention during the British Grand Prix last year. The spotlight was on the company when Sebastian Vettel showcased a demonstration run in Nigel Mansell’s iconic championship-winning 1992 car, powered by P1 Fuels’ own fossil-free fuel.
Co-founder of P1 Fuels, Benjamin Pochammer, has disclosed that the company has initiated collaborations with certain F1 team suppliers to explore prospective partnerships. Their main objective is the convert F1 to utilizing fully sustainable fuel by the year 2026. P1 Fuels is intent on enhancing the sport’s sustainability by forging these future alliances with potential entrants.
Speaking on this, Pochammer said, “We really have a vision, and this is the first step, but the second step is getting out there so that everyone can use this kind of fuel, because that is the vision we have.” Aramco is currently the official fuel provider, but that may be subject to change with the dawn of a new era in F1. They already successfully supply the World Rally Championship, aiming to do the same in F1.

The collaboration between the company and Sebastian Vettel has played a vital role in raising awareness about P1’s products and appealing to the F1 audience. The legend garners attention and interest with everything he does, and it is no different with P1 Fuels. Their association, however, is purely informal, with Vettel simply driven by the shared goal of contributing to climate preservation.
Sebastian Vettel has expressed immense admiration for the work of P1 Fuels. While he is not an official ambassador for the company, Vettel wholeheartedly supports their efforts. He has shown his commitment to using P1 fuel by declaring that he will exclusively drive cars powered by P1 fuel at any motorsport events he participates in. His endorsement is a testament to his belief in the product’s quality and sustainability.
The initiative shown by the German veteran is remarkable, as he continues to fuel his love for motorsport by aspiring to bring about positive changes, despite having retired at the end of 2022. He will be doing the same at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. A switch to conservative, sustainable fuel will no doubt be a massively positive change by F1 and a big step in their goal of reducing their carbon footprint.
