“I need to go…,” Sergio Perez reveals post F1 retirement plans
Sergio Perez
After winning the Monaco Grand Prix, Sergio Perez currently sits only 15 points ahead of his teammate Max Verstappen. The next race is Baku, the site of Perez’s first victory for Red Bull. With the wind in his sails, Perez would hope he can snatch victory at the event for the second year in a row.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s race, Perez highlighted the difficulties of being a Latin American racing driver. After winning in Monaco, Perez is now the most successful Mexican driver of all time, ahead of Pedro Rodriguez. Being the only Latin American on the grid currently, he recognizes the prestige of winning the Monaco Grand Prix.
Perez said: “In terms of the history of the sport, I’m a big fan of my sport. Knowing what it means to win a race like that, I mean, they’re all very important, but certainly, it was very special, and it goes very, very high on the list for my country.”
“I certainly feel like at the moment, I’m the only Mexican – or even Latin American – driver on the grid. So it just shows how difficult it is for us – I’m not saying that for European drivers it’s easy – to make it into the sport and to have a successful career in this sport. It is quite hard, but I have to say, I’m extremely proud of it.”
Perez does not intend to stay in Motorsport after his Formula 1 career
In a press conference following the Monaco Grand Prix, Perez had said that he has no interest in trying to attain the ‘Triple Crown’ of Motorsport. Instead, he wants to focus on spending time with his family. This was different than what teammate Verstappen had said, as he was at least interested in the ’24 Hours of Le Mans’ and other endurance racing.
Perez is set to remain at Red Bull till at least 2024, and it is even possible that he might extend that, or maybe compete with some other team in Formula 1. After Formula 1, his team in motorsports will be at an end, as the Mexican has no interest in competing in any other racing series like IndyCar or Formula E.
Perez said: “I have no interest, to be honest.” and in response to Verstappen’s interest in endurance racing, Perez added: “In endurance, I don’t know if I’ll do that one day. I don’t think so.”
“I think once I am done with F1, I need to go back and look after my kids. I already have three. I’ll be quite busy.”
Perez’s current thoughts on competing in other racing series are clear: no interest. But no one knows for certain. For now, Perez is certainly very focused on his Formula 1 career – and he will hope to cut down Verstappen’s lead at the top, and possibly eclipse Charles Leclerc in the standings. Or both.
