Sergio Perez stands firm, says George Russell ‘clearly’ made a mistake in Austria crash

Sergio Perez’s 2022 F1 title hopes were dealt another major blow, as the Mexican driver had another DNF to his name. This is the Red Bull driver’s third DNF this season, with two of them coming in the span of just three races. Once considered as rival to teammate Max Verstappen, Perez is miles adrift of the Dutchman at the moment.

Sergio Perez and George Russell had a coming together in Austria, which more or less ended the former’s race. The Mexican blamed the Mercedes driver for his reckless error, stating that he was clearly ahead. However, Russell did not hold back either, and believes Perez was at fault for the crash.

Speaking to the media before the French GP, Sergio Perez stayed adamant that the incident in Austria was not his fault. He stated that the incident will not impact his future wheel-to-wheel battles with George Russell.

Well, I don’t think it will affect… but certainly there are some drivers that you can race a lot closer than others,” said Perez.

“It was anyway lap one and from my point of view he clearly did a mistake. I was clearly ahead. And I think there shouldn’t have been a contact,” he added, as quoted by PlanetF1.

Sergio Perez lags behind his teammate Max Verstappen by 57 points in the championship battle. The Mexican rues the missed chances in Canada and Austria, and stated that losing so many points is a big blow for his title hopes.

“It is crucial. It’s been really difficult. Like you say, two DNFs in the last three races, it’s really bad for the championship hopes,” Perez said.

However, Sergio Perez wants to go into the summer break on the back of two big point overhauls in France and Hungary. Ferrari were quicker compared to Red Bull in Austria, as Charles Leclerc ensured that the Italian side secured their second successive win.

“Hopefully we are able to get in the run and start scoring those big points in the next two weekends before the summer break,” he added.

Although, Ferrari looked too strong on Red Bull’s home soil, Helmut Marko does not see a sign of concern. The veteran chalked down the result to an error in the set-up for the final race.
