Sergio Perez’s reckless move leaves Christian Horner fuming at Hungarian GP FP1 session
Sergio Perez's struggles continue as his FP1 session in Budapest ends in a crash.
Christian Horner was speechless on the Red Bull pit wall. Sergio Perez crashed at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Mexican dropped his tyre on the grass at turn five. The car spun 180 degrees and hit the tyre barrier and the front left tyre got ripped off. Perez’s FP1 session ended in just six minutes as Horner watched the accident replays, looking puzzled on the sidelines.
Christian Horner expressed his frustration and explained that Sergio Perez had just put a wheel on the grass, making a mistake at Turn 5. He also conveyed hope that Perez would not have lost too much time. Attributing it to the challenging weather conditions that limited the number of laps other drivers could do. However, he acknowledged that it was not the ideal way to start the weekend.
“It’s obviously frustrating to have had that off,” Horner told Sky Sports F1. “It was unfortunate. He [Sergio Perez] just put a wheel on the grass and made a mistake at Turn 5. Hopefully, he won’t have lost too much,” he continued “But not the ideal way to start the weekend.”
Sergio Perez’s future depends on Christian Horner as Ricciardo makes his F1 comeback
Amid extra scrutiny about his future, the Mexican faced a tough weekend. After failing to reach Q3 in the last five events, he exclaimed, his disbelief on the radio. Compounding the pressure, Daniel Ricciardo’s arrival at AlphaTauri replaced Nyck de Vries, intensifying the spotlight on his performance. Team principal Christian Horner claims that a crash was indeed Perez’s fault.
Horner explained in the same interview that Perez got through Turn 4 okay, on his first lap but a misjudgement on his part caused a mistake. According to Horner, Sergio put a wheel on the grass before Turn 5, causing the car to swap ends. He further noted that the frustration in Perez’s voice was evident as he raised his hands in acknowledgement.
“He got through Turn 4 ok, he just misjudged it, it was a mistake, he put a wheel on the grass on the approach to Turn 5 and it just swapped ends on him,” the Brit explained. “You could hear the frustration in his voice.”
Sergio Perez has been struggling with the likes of RB19. Where Max Verstappen secures win by win, his teammate barely finds his way onto the podium. With just ten races into the season, Verstappen already has a 99-point lead, looking to take his third consecutive championship.
