The FIA is the major governing body of motorsports which is responsible for the rule-making and ensuring safety across all competitions, including F1. The FIA has been around since 1904, and its role is now questioned by renowned journalist David Croft who has suggested a major change in roles for decision makers in F1.
Croft said that the FIA and Liberty Media (F1’s commercial rights holder) should come together to decide on regulations. While Liberty Media does have a say in the process currently, Croft said that the final decision-making power lies with the FIA. Croft said that the current balance of power lies on the engineering side. He believes the scales should tip in the favour of marketing a bit for proper functioning of F1.
“First and foremost, I’d have to stop the FIA being the rule-makers. I think the time has come in F1 to actually bring the two parties a lot more closely aligned. But we need to think about the show and the spectacle. Marketing sometimes needs to be a bit more important than engineering,” Croft said on Sky F1 Podcast.

Three time Le Mans winner believes FIA’s intervention to end Red Bull’s domination is inevitable
Red Bull are showing no signs of faltering as they race towards a record breaking season of winning every race. While this may be a treat for all the Red Bull fans, former Le Mans winner David Kennedy has claimed that the FIA won’t be very happy with this one-sided competition and will do everything in their power to remove this domination.
Kennedy said that the FIA is known to keep making changes to their rulebook in order to ensure a balanced competition. He says that the viewership gets decreased when one team is completely dominating and the results get very predictable. Kennedy also drew on Michael Schumacher’s dominance and how the FIA made changes to the regulations then to counter his dominance.
“History has proven that [the FIA] have done that… they’ve done it, ostensibly, when Michael Schumacher was dominating… It has a detrimental effect on the sport, absolutely. And it takes the interest away. There’s nothing worse than knowing what the result is going to be,” Kennedy told PlanetF1.
