Helmut Marko and Sergio Perez

Helmut Marko the Red Bull team adviser after the chaotic Austrian Grand Prix has given his thoughts on the misery that Sergio Perez had to go through during the race.

Sergio Perez went into the gravel during the first lap of the race when the Mexican tried to overtake George Russell while being on the outside which is always a risky thing to do at Turn 4 of the circuit.

Unfortunately that was unnecessary.”

The vastly experienced 79-year-old has indicated that ahead of the race it was decided that the Red Bull drivers were not going to risk position by trying to overtake on the outside of turn 4 but Perez did the opposite of it and tumbled down the order when he came back onto the track.

Helmut Marko thinks that the postponement of the new technical directive is good, but that ‘it’s still too early’.

Helmut thinks that it was totally unnecessary and irresponsible on part of Perez as during the race there was enough evidence on show to prove that it was possible to overtake at various other areas of the circuit.

Sergio Perez came to Austria high on confidence after a podium finish at Silverstone but the Mexican progress came to a halt even before it got properly going at the Red Bull Ring.

After sustaining damage from the clash with Russell, the 32-year-old was only able to last till lap 27 and after that was forced to retire from the race.

The result in Austria has put a hefty dent in his challenge for the 2022 drivers title as Charles Leclerc after winning the Austrian Grand Prix has overtaken Perez in the standings.

After today’s result, Leclerc has frog-jumped Perez to get to 170 points whereas the Red Bull driver is still stuck on 151 points after 10 rounds of the 2022 Formula One season.

If Sergio Perez wants to get back into the Championship fight then he has got only one option on the table and that is to come up with a strong performance at the upcoming French Grand Prix.
