Currently, the Formula 1 calendar has 22 races. However, this is due to change next year, with the inclusion of a new street race in Las Vegas, and the return of the Qatar Grand Prix, after a year’s hiatus due to the FIFA World Cup also taking place there. It is also possible that the Grand Prix in China will return – barring any issues related to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This brings us up to 25 races for next season. Aside from these, the Formula 1 management is reportedly also in talks over a potential return to South Africa. The track, called ‘Kyalami’ and situated in Johannesburg, may return to the calendar as soon as next year, with only apparently needing minor tweaks to be deemed worthy of the Formula 1 calendar.

Formula 1 has been globalizing and expanding its horizons for a long time. While most of the events are concentrated in Europe, the number of events in other regions has increased. The United States will have 3 races on the Formula 1 calendar by 2023, as the popularity of the sport continues to skyrocket in the country.

Formula 1 management seeking to change the Concorde Agreement

Stefano Domenicali
Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali will reportedly be in South Africa soon to negotiate Kyalami’s return.

Aside from The United States, the sport has also expanded its reach in the Middle East. As of next year, the calendar will have 4 races in the Middle East – Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar. Of course, if Formula 1 includes all of the races that have been proposed above, it will have 26 races.

This, of course, is not allowed by the Concorde Agreement, decided upon by the teams and the management in 2020. The current limit is set at 24, which means the Formula 1 management will have to remove some other events. Indeed, the future of the French, Monaco and Belgian Grand Prix is up into question. However, there is still time to find an agreement.

In fact, Formula 1 President, Stefano Domenicali is reported by De Telegraaf to be soon meeting up with the Kyalami track’s officials, discussing its return for the 2023 season. It remains to be seen how the situation develops, but it is very likely, that if the teams agree, Formula 1 will expand to include 25 races in a single season.
