“The last time I saw something like that was between Michael Schumacher and the Ferrari team” : Martin Brundle claims that the Tifosi has much affection to share for Charles Leclerc

Given the Maranello-based racing team’s disheartening performance in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in the challenging Baku City Circuit following a double DNF from Ferrari, things aren’t exactly the best for the racing team. However, F1 journalist Martin Brundle contends that Ferrari’s Monacan driver Charles Leclerc has other hopeful things to look forward to from the Italian giants.

The Monegasque has erupted to 4 successive pole positions but has struggled to capitalize any of them due to a combination of mechanical failures and Scuderia strategic planning gaffes. When he was leading the race in the Baku City Circuit on Sunday, his power unit and prospects of triumph came to an abrupt end, but Brundle noted down one major plus for Leclerc.

“He loves Ferrari and Ferrari love him, in a way that, the last time I saw something like that was between Michael Schumacher and the Ferrari team. There’s an awful lot of love to burn through there but right now, Leclerc must be feeling as bruised as Lewis’ back,” said Brundle.

Reliability issues have been plaguing Charles Leclerc: Martin Brundle

After that latest bit of bad luck, Leclerc has slumped to third in the Drivers’ Championship standings, and Brundle acknowledges that reliability could set him back in his attempt to battle reigning F1 World Champion Max Verstappen for the title in 2022.

“We’re into the thick of a 22-race season. Races are coming relentlessly at us. If you’ve got one big issue, you go and fix it, but there are various gremlins that Ferrari is having. Charles Leclerc must be beside himself. He could have had four glorious victories,” added Brundle.

“He’s sticking the car on pole position, driving beautifully and then this kind of thing is happening to him just way too much,” concluded the F1 journalist. The Canadian Grand Prix this weekend could prove to be very crucial for the Monacan if he still wishes to keep his hopes of the championship alive.
