“They didn’t take a wrong turn,” Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel defend FIA for their decision to change the regulations
Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel
Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel were asked if the new regulations regarding the 2022 aeros were a “wrong turn” or not, to which both the drivers completely denied the wrong direction talks and trusted the new regs for better racing this season. Gasly and Seb also added the priority on the driver’s health and car performance on account of the floor regulations making the car bounce.
2022 saw a major turn in the regulations of the F1 cars, mainly sticking to the aerodynamics of the car and less to the engine specifications. The new regs were brought to the sport to reduce the gap in midfield and the top teams with less drag and close racing. Which if we notice now turns out to be true. But the downside to the new cars is the porpoising issues a lot of teams are suffering from, which makes the loss performance in the overall perspective.
Gasly and Vettel conveyed their thought in the account of this, “Personally, I don’t think they took a wrong turn,” the Frenchman said. “I think it’s just some of the side effects we are getting at the moment are probably slightly more extreme than we expected.” Gasly said considering Porpoising as an issue.
“to trade between our health and performance, because obviously we’re racing drivers, we will always go for performance every single time.”Gasly concluded.
Sebastian agreeing with the Frenchmen said, “I think the objective with the new regulations of the new cars was to make it better so I think the turn has been right,” the four-time World Champion said. Obviously, we still have to see the bigger picture over years to come, whether it has been the right direction or not, but we are able to follow each other closer.”
Sebastian Vettel on DRS assistance still required to take the car ahead
Vettel pointed out close racing which completes the main motive of the 2022 cars, but the car with less porpoising still has a major advantage over other cars, Red Bull being one of them. DRS is still a major tool for an overtaking opportunity the car requires if it wants to go ahead.
“The cars have less drag, which means we have to follow closer as well otherwise we won’t make the overtaking. We still rely on DRS.” “Therefore I think it’s good that the FIA is trying to have a look and we will see in which form they are going to intervene.” Sebastian concluded by agreeing with FIA intervention and new regs as a success in the 2022 season.
