In the current era of Formula 1, the sport witnesses 10 teams on the grid. Out of the 10 teams, only 4 teams have their self produced power units in the back of their cars. The rest 6 teams purchase the essential component to run the car at the top speed from its rivals. In the history of the sport, this has led to a number of controversies. The recent controversy was witnessed in the 2020 season, when the Racing Point team was nicknamed the ‘Pink Mercedes’ as the team had developed a car with a lot of similarities to the 2019 Mercedes winner. The said car was protested by other teams in the paddock, leading to a penalty and fine for the constructor.
The 2022 season observes a similar story, with the Haas being nicknamed as the ‘White Ferrari’ around the paddock. The American team purchases its engine from the Ferrari and it is believed that they have developed a car very similar to the Italian constructor. On this note, McLaren team principal, Andreas Seidl talked about the potential benefits to be gained by the senior team in any partnership.
Andreas Seidl Opines On The Issues Of Relationship Between Two Teams In Formula 1
The German is the team principal at McLaren, who itself a customer of Mercedes for the power units. McLaren has also been frequently linked with a potential co-op with Andretti or Audi. Speaking about the issues, Andreas Seidl stated, “It allows B-teams with let’s say, less effort, putting less effort in, to over perform. But even more worrying is that the A-team is benefiting from it. I hope that F1 never ends up in a position that you need to have a second team in order to fight at the front.”
Andreas Seidl further vocalised on how Haas deserves the credit for its performances in 2022 so far. Furthermore, he presented his views on what facilities should be allowed to share between teams. He said, “Things like infrastructure sharing should be banned, because there’s a lot of things that can’t be policed properly and things you can’t police properly, you should ban, because then you are clear, and then you also avoid the discussion of what’s going there, what’s going on there. It’s just clean.”
The McLaren team principal confidently spoke about the team’s ambitions and how they don’t want to join forces with another team to fight at front. He even spoke highly of the system FIA has in the place currently and is confident that the organisation is more than capable to scrutinise any team who tries to gain an advantage unfairly.
