‘This might be Ricciardo’s best move’ Joe Saward believes Daniel Ricciardo should join Mercedes as a reserve driver

McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo has been a key figure in the paddock. Always smiling and making sure everyone has a good time. The Aussie’s personality is one of a kind and has the ability to brighten up the paddock. Unfortunately a plethora of bad results have made it more and more to keep that smile intact.

After leaving Red Bull in 2018, Daniel joined Renault and did 2 seasons with them. After which he decided that McLaren is the place to be and signed a contract with the British manufacturer.

2 years down the line and we’re here at this point where it’s unsure whether the Daniel Ricciardo will even drive in the sport next year. After his Red Bull stint, this seemed like the Honey Badger’s chance to be a part of a top team again but unfortunately things didn’t turn out that way. The partnership was just not meant to be between the two parties.

The only highlight for Daniel Ricciardo of his time in the team till now has to be the win in Monza in 2021 where the team also achieved a 1-2 finish. This will the give departing Aussie a sweet memory of being the only McLaren driver to win a race for them in almost a decade.

F1 Journalist Joe Saward wrote in his blog about what the Daniel Ricciardo could do further onwards to save his career. Since Mercedes powertrains were the ones that he struggled to adapt with, it would be a smart idea for Daniel to become a reserve driver for Mercedes and bring his confidence back up.

That way he could learn a bit more about how the car operates and use the information when he lands another seat in a Merc powered car. Here is what Joe Saward had to say.

“It has been also been suggested that Ricciardo’s best move might be to become reserve driver at Mercedes, to help build up his confidence again,” he said.

In the end, it is obvious that Daniel Ricciardo is a hell of a good driver. Not anyone can achieve 8 grand prix victories in the pinnacle of motorsport. That being said, he just isn’t able to adapt to the McLaren which downplays his abilities. Hopefully if he takes this role, there will be less pressure on him which would allow him to build back up into his old self.
