“To get points was a nice reward,” Nicholas Latifi delighted to score his first points of the season at the Japanese GP

Canadian racing driver Nicholas Latifi

Nicholas Latifi has had his worst season since his career started. After being brutally trolled by all the fans throughout social media and after being in the spotlight of last season’s championship decider, Latifi will be stopping his drive at Williams after the 2022 season ends. This could very much mean the end of his career in the sport if no teams sign him again. Latifi will bid his farewell at the end of this season to a team that only managed a P10 in the constructors, yet, Latifi managed to get points for the second year in continuity.

Nicholas Latifi drove very decently in Japan after taking a gamble to get himself a lighter Inters as soon as the race started. Though he struggled at the start of his stint but later got all the power. He pitted for Inters at the same time as Sebastian Vettel and managed a P9 finish scoring 2 points, his first this season, at Suzuka. Driving a Williams to the points hasn’t been much of his work but he did complete it this time with his teammate out of the race.

Latifi explained his race and struggles driving in the wet: “[I’m] really happy with that. Obviously, that was crucial in getting those points, [also] having a little bit of free air because that was the biggest thing in being in the pack was the spray. The tyre was clearly the wrong choice, the full wet.” as per Formula1.com.

Nicholas Latifi is referred to as ‘Goatifi’ by all the fans as a sort of troll, due to him crashing very often. However, this hasn’t been very kind to the team with bills to get his car all repaired after the damage affected the budget. With no seat next season, Latifi understands he will be leaving the sport after this season.

Latifi thinks this race wouldn’t have made a difference to his future in any case: “It’s nice to get some points for sure but again in the end… even if a decision hadn’t been made yet about my future, a race like this wouldn’t have really changed much,”

Latifi said that the points are a personal boost, but nothing more than that: “It’s obviously a nice personal boost for me for sure, coming to the end of the season and my time with the team. Obviously, it’s just some more points for the team, which is always great. But beyond that, nothing much more.”

Nicholas Latifi never got a chance to drive for the team at the top so it will always be difficult to guess his full potential but as per his career at Williams, it was not very amazing. However, the Canadian has definitely had his moments, and Suzuka will be counted among those.
