“Try and keep your car evolving to its full potential,” Paul Monaghan sheds some light on the future characteristics of RB-18

Paul Monaghan

Paul Monaghan, Red Bull’s chief engineer, lately talked about the evolution of the tracks that might force his team to improve and adapt to new versions of RB18. In comparison to Ferrari’s F1-75, RB-18 looked pretty decent on the straights but struggled to get the slow corner speed that their rival got hold of.

RB-18 is one of the quickest cars on the straights, which enables them to get overtakes easily whenever it comes down to no brake zone. But they haven’t really figured out a way to get their corner speed which still weakens them on some tracks. But Paul and the engineers are working towards getting a perfect setup that might suit a variety of tracks.

Paul talked about the evolution that might hurt the teams and hold them back if they don’t learn and adapt to various conditions and stick with their original strength.

“And if you stand still in this sport, you can often be left behind, so if we don’t look and learn and reconsider that would be a little bit presumptuous of us.” said Red Bulls Cheif Engineer.

He continued pointing out a few tracks coming up that need changes to the car to overcome the strength of the rival Baku is up next and Red Bull has been out strong their last season and will hope to do this season as well. Silverstone could be a track that benefits the Bulls, Hungry is still quite unpredictable for everyone. Abu Dhabi still might be right or wrong for them.
“I think Baku will pull everybody in one particular direction. I think Silverstone, that could produce a bit of difference, shall we say? Spielberg will produce a bit of difference.”

“On Hungary, I expect there’ll be a convergence again, but that’s track nature and how we best exploit our lap time, isn’t it?”

“But come [the final race in] Abu Dhabi we might have got it right or wrong.” these are the exact words from Paul.

Red Bull as mentioned earlier struggle in slow-speed corners, but Ferrari has quite nicely mastered it but they are stuck with their pattern to be good on the corners. On the other hand, Red Bull is good at the other part of the circuits and is still working to improve on the other one.
“They tend to be quite strong [at] low speed. And then we tend to be better in other areas of the circuit.” said Monaghan, “Are they stuck in that pattern? I don’t know. Are we stuck in ours? No, not at all. We are open-minded to change.” reported Motorsport.com.

Red Bull and Ferrari were almost equal in Monaco which was expected to be a Ferrari favoured track but eventually saw the Red Bull win. With the Ferrari taking the pole it was the Red Bull of Sergio Perez that managed the win. Ferrari still has plenty of things to mark their way through over the top. But Red Bull is pretty much getting ready to their hands on the title, and they could manage it pretty well if they figure out a proper setup suiting almost all the tracks.
