Valtteri Bottas aiming higher with Alfa Romeo: “I feel like we should be fourth”

Alfa Romeo are currently 6th in the Constructor Standings, which is quite an improvement over last year, and in terms of points as well. Valtteri Bottas has collected 46 of the 51 points that Alfa Romeo have, while Zhou Guanyu has contributed the other 5. Both have drove fairly well, however, reliability has often evaded them and Alfa Romeo.

Reliability is currently one of the chief concerns for the team, but they are also really not in the fight against the ‘top’ midfield teams – Alpine and McLaren and are some way off both of them. They are closer to Haas in points, but they have obviously been superior this year. But luck has not always come their way.

Bottas left Mercedes at the end of last year and came to Alfa Romeo, who have a new look lineup for this year. He is providing the team with his experience in order to improve them, and he also brings his amazing pace to the table. While Alfa Romeo have improved a lot, Bottas is hoping for more than this.

Valtteri Bottas has impressed with his performances this season, especially considering his package. Unfortunately, for the last few races, the car just really hasn’t been as good as Alpine or McLaren, and he has also had to retire twice – most recently from a power unit issue in Hungary.

Talking to GPFans, Bottas expanded on what Alfa Romeo (and his) targets for the season are: “I feel like overall, Fred’s [Vasseur, Alfa Romeo team principal]… our team’s targets are slightly more conservative. I think he would be happy to be in the teams’ top six and one driver in the top 10.”

He continued: “But personally, I would like to be seventh in the driver’s championship and the best of the rest. As a team, I feel like we should be fourth. That’s the target, but the form of Alpine and McLaren recently is a bit scary. I think they’re the main targets, Alpine and McLaren. But for those targets, we need to be scoring consistently and getting rid of the issues we’ve had this year.”

Bottas said that he had set a personal goal of reaching 50 points before the summer break, unfortunately, he has fallen shy by 4. Despite this, he made it clear that Alfa Romeo are focusing on long-term goals: “Let’s say if we would only have 20 points, even that, it would have not been a big disappointment because we’re aiming for long-term, not just short-term success.”

Bottas said that this is just the starting point – and it’s a little bit better than they had been expecting. He said that it’s important to aim for the long-term and to think for one or two years ahead.
