Martin Brundle, a former Formula 1 driver and seasoned Sky Sports F1 presenter, shared his share of surprise at Daniel Ricciardo’s choice to return to the sport with AlphaTauri. The remaining rounds of the 2023 season will see Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda take Nyck de Vries‘ spot, it was revealed on Tuesday. This will mark the Australian’s comeback to the grid after he lost his McLaren seat at the end of 2022.
Brundle realizes the high stakes, but he also understands that having Ricciardo on the grid gives Formula 1 more life. Daniel Ricciardo’s presence on the grid makes Formula 1 feel better, and Brundle admitted, “I hated seeing him having to loiter around all weekend.” In the end, Ricciardo is keeping an eye on Sergio Perez’s Red Bull drive, especially given the Mexican’s erratic performance recently.
Ricciardo had previously said he was looking for a top position in order to explore returning to Grand Prix racing, but he will instead race in the worst-performing vehicle in 2023, which has only scored two points. Daniel must defeat his soon-to-be teammate Yuki Tsunoda in qualifying and the races, that is how Red Bull is going to measure his developments, according to Martin.
Daniel Riccardo might have a fairytale Red Bull return if his AlphaTauri performance shows promise

On the Tuesday following the British Grand Prix, Daniel Riccardo had his first set of drive in a Red Bull single seater for the first time after 2018. The Australian showed a heroic performance during the testing. Later, the decisions to sack Nyck from his Alpha Tauri seat was made public. It has to be noted that this switch to AlphaTauri is not permanent and Christian Horner emphasized on the word ‘loaned out’, which would significantly change the narrative of the whole situation.
Sergio Perez has been handed a fresh warning as De Vries’s Sacking shows how Red Bull will not think twice before replacing him. And Riccardo being loaned out to AlphaTauri means he will be back after the season is over who might challenge him for the Red Bull seat if his bad performances continue. Daniel has the 2nd half of the season to impress the Red Bull chiefs if he wants a fairytale reunion in a Red Bull seat for 2024.
