The team principal of McLaren F1 team, Andreas Siedl explains McLaren’s eagerness to sign Alpine reserve driver Oscar Piastri. During the summer break, Oscar Piastri had rejected a seat with Alpine, leaving many fans wondering why.
There were rumours that Piastri had made an commitment to McLaren already and he rejected the seat in hopes that his commitment to McLaren would be honored. After the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board discussed Piastri’s case, they have allowed Oscar to go to McLaren and the team has announced that he will be driving for them in the 2023 F1 season.
“It’s a very exciting driver line-up. Two reasons why we wanted to have Oscar – I think he has shown in the training categories he is something very special and has a lot of potential. Plus, I think in terms of personality, I think he’s a perfect fit for our team. And that should be the main focus of the news,” says Andreas Siedl about the enthusiasm to sign Oscar Piastri.
Was McLaren’s risk to get Oscar Piastri on their side justified?
The Contract Recognition Board have finally reached a decision on the Oscar Piastri situation and have allowed him to race for McLaren in the 2023 F1 season. However, many are left wondering during this Piastri fiasco that whether McLaren have taken the right decision by embedding themselves within this issue.
The McLaren F1 team have taken quite a risk sticking their neck out for the 21 year old French driver. Undoubtedly the former F2 champion is qualified for a seat in F1 but with the way things have gone many re left questioning his integrity in the sport. Team principal’s like Toto Wolff and Christian Horner have spoken up about the situation and are bewildered with the way things were handled by the driver.
The next season is going to be a crucial one for McLaren and Oscar Piastri as many will be keeping an eye on his overall performance. Only next year will we find out whether the gamble McLaren took has paid off or not.
