“We don’t want him to change anything” : Ferrari explains Charles Leclerc’s ‘strike rate’

Despite recent on-track mistakes, according to Ferrari racing director Laurent Mekies, Ferrari does not want Monacan driver Charles Leclerc to make any changes. Leclerc crashed out of last weekend’s French Grand Prix while in the lead, leaving him 63 points behind title contender Max Verstappen going into Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Leclerc has lost 32 points to sloppy mistakes since the Monaco driver’s misstep at Imola earlier on in the season. The driver has acknowledged that he “knows who to blame” if he loses the championship by such a significant margin. Mekies inquired as to how Ferrari could assist Leclerc in reducing errors without compromising his pace, and he queried the motivation behind Ferrari to take such measures.

Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have experienced reliability concerns for Ferrari this season despite being in a solid position. Mekies was eager to compliment the drivers’ demeanour when they were back in the garage, despite the fact that they had both voiced irritation and frustration on the team radio.

“With both these guys, we have had very good highs and have had very painful lows this season. And in both directions, when they come back to the garage, you need to separate that from what you can hear on the radio in the heat of the moment when they are racing with high heart rates. I think it is two different things,” said Mekies.

Mekies concluded: “When they get out of the car and they analyse everything after, they will be back into the analysis mode and showing little emotion in a negative way. Instead, you can see that it drives them to even more motivation.”
