“We had the car to go to Q3,” Mick Schumacher misses chance to claim his first top-10 Qualifying finish ahead of Imola GP

Mick Schumacher missed a great chance to make it in the top-10 during the 2022 Emilia Romagna GP qualifying. The German qualified P12, matching his previous best set during the 2022 season opener in Bahrain. Meanwhile, his teammate Kevin Magnussen out-qualified the likes of Mercedes and McLaren and finished P4. This was his team’s best qualifying result in their history.

The Haas VF-22 has been raising eyebrows since Magnussen stole the show in Bahrain after returning to Formula One after a year. But mick is yet to score points or make it to Q3 in the same machinery and has been falling short ever since.

He believes today was the perfect opportunity for him to have sealed a top-10 start in the grid as the car was setting a fantastic pace. But the Red Flag and slippery track caused due to rainy weather played against the young German.

Mick Schumacher: “We will get there, we will be able to deal with the situation and improve.”

Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher sealed a P4 and P5 finish in FP1 in Imola ahead of the Qualifying. Both the Haas set a good pace and could have comfortably made it to Q3 based on their performances. But Carlos Sainz brought out the Red Flags in Q2 and then the weather deteriorated and left Schumacher at a disadvantage. He reflected on his misfortune post-race.

Schumacher said, “The red flag Sainz caused was pure bad luck. We had the car to go to Q3, but unfortunately, there were these weather conditions and the various errors did not help. If I had managed to finish the second lap I think I would have succeeded, but the fact remains that I should have done it sooner. We will get there, we will be able to deal with the situation and improve. We still have two races ahead of us this weekend, I’m confident ”.

He added, “As far as the Sprint Race is concerned, we are not too far from 12th place: we have to recover 2-3 positions and we would be in good shape for the main race. If we succeed it would be excellent, otherwise it will not be the end of the world anyway. In FP2 we have to understand the car better over long distances and then go towards the race.”

Max Verstappen claimed the pole position, his first of the season. Mick will be starting P12 for the first sprint race of the season. With Haas’s current pace and performance, he could still challenge for points.
