The growth of F1 has been immense in the past few years. It has grown tremendously in continents other than Europe, which has prompted the addition of more races on the race calendar.

2021 race calendar could only remain the longest for a year, as the calendar for the 2022 season was announced with 23 races, an extra than 2021 and only one less than permissible as per the agreement. With Las Vegas set to be added as a venue in 2023, we may see the calendar fill to the brim.

The possibility of the addition of more races has made Red Bull driver Sergio Perez speak up. The driver said if F1 adds more races, he’ll not tolerate it and might consider quitting the premier racing competition. Speaking to The Athletic, he said, “Having too many races is a no-go — at least for me. Right now…you’re basically (immersed in) it because we have so many races. We have simulator sessions before each event. We have a partner events.”

Clearing out his priorities, despite his love for the sport, Perez added, “So we basically we have zero time for ourselves and for our families. I have a couple of young children (with a third on the way). I think if the calendar (expands) more, then I definitely will not do it.”

Recent trends have shown great signs for F1. The viewers are growing so much so that F1 is planning to drop its traditional European races and replace them with American, African, and Asian races, where most of the new audience is coming from.

Perez, sharing his thoughts on the growth of F1, said, “What I’m really optimistic about is the fact it’s growing a lot. I can see wherever we go in the world, you feel it on the streets, people recognize you a lot more, people are into the sport a lot more. There’s a very big demand.”

The addition of new tracks could mean dropping old ones, and that’s where the challenge for F1 lies. It’s clear that Sergio is happy with the growth but won’t like more races. What’s possible is that other drivers follow the same suit as the Red Bull driver and voice their opinion against an already tight calendar.
