“Welcome to the cockpit,” Liam Lawson to make his official F1 debut with AlphaTauri at the Belgian GP
Liam Lawson in AlphaTauri
Liam Lawson, a 20-year-old driver is set to make his debut for AlphaTauri in the upcoming Belgian GP. Liam is from New Zealand currently driving in Formula 2. As per the new regulations each team will have to give a suitable chance to a driver to drive the Formula 1 car for at least one session of any race.
Liam will be driving for AlphaTauri in FP1 of the 14th race of the season. He will be taking the seat of Pierre Gasly, who has a contract for the next season but could very well manage to impress the team boss for a seat in the future. Yuki Tsunoda is having a pretty decent season and will do everything he could to retain his seat in the upcoming season. But Liam Lawson is planning to move up the ladder and will definitely target their seats.
As of now, AlphaTauri announced the young driver’s opportunity on Tuesday full filling one of their two-seat regulations of the season. “welcome back to the cockpit @LiamLawson30! the young Kiwi will make his official F1 session debut this weekend at Spa taking over the wheel of Pierre’s AT03,” announced AlphaTauri.
Liam Lawson’s F1 future
Liam is currently underperforming in Formula 2 being eighth in the championship, 92 points behind the leader, Felipe Drugovich. But he has this opportunity to prove himself at the best level with one shot opportunity.
Pierre Gasly with no guarantee of a drive in Red Bull will try moving on after serving one more year in AlphaTauri. That could be the perfect opportunity for the young driver to shine and hold his position for the future.
Yuki Tsunoda also has been in touch with no contract possible in the future. This could blow a clear chance for Liam to drive in Formula 1 beside Gasly next season, but Yuki will try his best to retain his seat.
