Mercedes driver George Russell, who dropped out of Q3 but was still able to maintain fifth place, is concerned about whether the W13 will be adequately prepared for the Austrian Grand Prix. Russell, though, thinks that given today’s speed, a competitive race will be anticipated if it is prepared.

“We ordinarily have better race pace than we do qualifying pace. We’re definitely there in the fight. As a team, probably our best qualifying of the year in terms of pace, but probably the worst in terms of outcome,” said Russell post-qualifying.

The British driver admitted that he has to regain his form again after a run of top-five finishes in every race this season. He was engaged in the lap one horrific crash of Guanyu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo at Silverstone. “I’m personally going through a tricky couple of races at the moment but we’ve got tomorrow to make up for it,” said Russell.

“We know that we’ve brought some things to the car, we know that Ferrari and Red Bull were probably pushing the boundaries with the planks a bit more than the interpretation and probably these things coming together has come in our favour,” added the young Briton.

When questioned about how he felt after the incident, Russell made it clear that he was okay but didn’t want to get ahead of himself regarding the race and was concerned about whether the car will be ready and what set-up to use.
