“What is his alternative”: Helmut Marko acknowledges Pierre Gasly is stuck at AlphaTauri for the time being
Pierre Gasly in Red Bull in 2019
When Pierre Gasly got into the Red Bull Junior Team in 2014 with Alex Lynn and Carlos Sainz Jr, the Frenchman was beside himself with joy because only a few get the opportunity to join the prestigious team. But as the situation currently stands for Gasly, 8 years later, signing with Red Bull has somewhat paralysed him from moving forward in his Formula 1 career.
When Pierre Gasly got promoted to Red Bull to drive beside Max Verstappen as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo, future seemed bright for him. But in the same year, in 2019, he was demoted again to Toro Rosso, and was replaced by Alex Albon, just ahead of that year’s Belgian Grand Prix. Red Bull had commented on Pierre’s demotion, saying that they needed to evaluate Albon’s performance in the rest of the races of 2019 to decide who would take the seat beside Verstappen in 2020.
Come 2020, Pierre Gasly was retained at AlphaTauri, the now-rebranded Toro Rosso, and he delivered some spectacular performance in this year. His blazing victory at the 2020 Monza Grand Prix made him the only French racer to win a GP in 24 years. But even then, he never went back to Red Bull despite him expressing his wishes to do so, and in 2021, Red Bull signed Sergio Perez to partner Verstappen.
Pierre Gasly cannot leave Red Bull due to the lack of better options
An experienced and skilled racer like Sergio Perez was expected to give great results in a successful team like Red Bull, and the Mexican stayed true to the promises. In 2022, he won the Monaco Grand Prix, and was renewed for another couple of years at the Milton-Keynnes-based team.
For Pierre Gasly, who stood a chance to get Sergio Perez’s seat in future, the news of the Mexican’e contract renewal came as a shock and an utter disappointment. But Perez has excelled in his job of providing a solid support for Max Verstappen, therefore it would make no sense for the team to drop him now.
Looking forward to the near future, Dr. Helmut Marko, Chief Advisor to the Red Bull Racing team, did mention that he has spoken to Pierre Gasly about returning to Red Bull. He said, ”Of course I spoke with Gasly and explained the situation to him. We will see after ’23 how it goes further with Gasly.”
As of now, Helmut Marko said Pierre Gasly does not have any option but to remain in AlphaTauri. He said, “What is his alternative? There is no alternative that is clearly better than AlphaTauri.”
