“You came off very selfish,” Fan bash George Russell after his “untrustworthy” fight with Lewis Hamilton at the Dutch GP

George Russell

George Russell took his sixth podium of the season after beating his teammate head to head on track. Though he mentioned it to be his one of the best races ever, Fans have a different perspective over Lewis Hamilton’s lost podium or maybe a win. A part of it could be blamed on Mercedes for a messed-up strategy.

Lewis Hamilton was on the verge of winning his first race since last season’s Jeddha GP. Mercedes themselves haven’t been up to their mark for a win this season. But Dutch GP was the closest to all where the silver arrows could have pulled off a win. Ferrari has been in a very critical place this season for their strategies, but Mercedes joins their party after messing up Lewis Hamilton’s strategy after the safety car at the Dutch GP.

George Russell on the other hand took things under his control and decided to pit at the very right time for a new set of the soft compounds to get past his teammate for the second position. Fans didn’t really like George’s decision to make a pit all by himself with Lewis left out alone defending against the likes of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.

The clear thing to do and understand in a race is to fight for the win. Lewis Hamilton was fighting his way for the win but the safety hindered his way to the top. People expected George to either stay on the medium and defend Lewis from Max until Hamilton gets his way ahead or less either pit and fight Max all by himself for the P2 spot and let Hamilton make his way ahead. Though non of the two happened.

“Not a good look today. You came off as very selfish and untrustworthy. I get it, it’s a sport and you play for yourself. But I wonder if abandoning your teammate and taking second place for yourself, was really worth it in the grand scheme of things,” a Fan tweeted.

Mercedes almost won the race and maybe with a bit of luck could have finished 1-2 at Max Verstappen’s home. Although a P2 and P4 isn’t really a bad finish for the British team, they almost competed with the likes of the top two teams which is a great positive to get themselves to Italy.
