“You guys need to give him a bit of a break,” Sebastian Vettel stands up for Ferrari junior, Mick Schumacher, amidst criticism

Sebastian Vettel came out in defense of his protégé, Mick Schumacher.

Mick Schumacher’s search for his first points in Formula 1 continues. All of the fifteen points that Haas has scored this season have come from the car of Kevin Magnussen. He is one of two regular drivers that are yet to score a point this season, the other being Williams’ Nicholas Latifi.

Haas as a team have not scored points since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. They showed strong pace in qualifying in Spain, but an early collision for Kevin Magnussen with Lewis Hamilton meant that Magnussen went straight to the back of the pack and was not able to recover, eventually finishing 17th. Magnussen had started at eight on the grid, with Schumacher making his first Q3 appearance at Barcelona. The German also finished out of the points, eventually.

Mick Schumacher had been running in the points in Miami, but he collided with Sebastian Vettel when they were both in the points, and eventually finished 15th. In Monaco, both Haas’ drivers suffered from a retirement., after starting 13th (Magnussen) and 15th (Schumacher). Both retired almost in quick succession, with Magnussen suffering a power unit issue, and Schumacher being involved in a horrendous crash, which split his car in two. He had also crashed during qualifying in Saudi Arabia, and surely, these crashes and collisions could not have been cheap.

Vettel feels the media have been giving Mick Schumacher a hard time

Sebastian Vettel wants the media to give Mick Schumacher a break.

After his latest crash, Sebastian Vettel was quick to come to the defense of the man many consider his protégé. He was of the view that journalists have been too critical of Mick Schumacher, which may be affecting his drives. Clearly, being the son of a seven-time world champion comes with its own quirks, one of them being expectations.

On Schumacher’s crash, Vettel opined: “It’s so easy to get it wrong so quickly. I don’t know exactly what happened to him, I haven’t seen it. But the main thing is he’s okay.”

It is obvious that Schumacher needs to and can improve himself this season to do more for his team, and Vettel felt the same way.

“I think there’s no doubt he’s capable of doing a lot more than what he’s showing at the minute.”

He also added that Schumacher needs a break from the constant media pressure and criticism, so he can clear his mind and focus on what’s important: racing.

“But I think you guys need to give him a bit of a break.”

Sebastian Vettel was able to score a point in Monaco, after starting 9th on the grid. Mick Schumacher would be hoping for points at the next Grand Prix in Baku, so he can finally get his first one, and break the ‘duck(s)’ on his résumé. Vettel would hope for more of the same, after what has been an up-and-down season.
