McLaren’s drive for heightened performance materialized in an advanced wind tunnel, finalized earlier this year. Temporarily reliant on Toyota’s Cologne tunnel, the team eagerly anticipates its deployment. Beyond this, McLaren rejuvenated its Woking Technology Centre, augmenting it with cutting-edge simulation tools and a fresh manufacturing site. These upgrades spotlight their commitment to innovation and excellence.
The team CEO Zak Brown, amid all these developments, eyes a championship contention in the upcoming seasons. Brown stated that aside from continuous adjustments, substantial disparities like those experienced over the past five years no longer exist. He mentioned significant shortcomings, such as the absence of an independent wind tunnel, reliance on a two-decade-old simulator, etc.
Brown emphasized that the current phase will revolve around refinement rather than major overhauls. The American further stated that there are no pressing concerns requiring immediate attention, such as the need for a new wind tunnel. However, he expressed that all these aspects have been appropriately addressed and put in place.
“I think, other than constant fine-tuning, there’s not big gaps like we’ve had the last five years. Not having our own wind tunnel, having a 20-year-old simulator, being behind in CFD technology, those were big holes. Now this is going to be about fine-tuning. There isn’t anything that we’re staring at that is like, ‘We need a new wind tunnel’. All that will be in place,” Zak Brown told Autosport.

McLaren’s evolving leadership set the stage for a performance boost
Alongside enhancing its wind tunnel, McLaren rejuvenated its Woking Technology Centre. Upgrades include advanced simulations, a new manufacturing site, and key personnel additions like Red Bull’s Rob Marshall and Ferrari’s David Sanchez. These efforts aim to catapult McLaren from the midfield, showcasing their dedication to achieving competitive excellence. Zak Brown, amid all these developments, eyes a championship contention in the upcoming seasons.
Zak Brown commented on the changes in leadership and structure, along with the anticipated contribution of new team members toward performance. He stated that ongoing developments, including the wind tunnel, are underway, the full transition to the new framework. Personnel like Marshall and Sanchez is projected for 2025, with their roles commencing in January.
“We have different leadership and structure. Then we have new people coming in, which should be another contribution to performance. While we’ve got everything coming online now, like the wind tunnel, it really won’t be until 2025 that everything has started from a clean sheet of paper with the new structure and people in place,” he further continued.
